John is our VAT man and, as an ex senior officer with HM Customs & Excise (as it then was), he not only knows how VAT and the other taxes operate but, as importantly, he knows how Customs will seek to apply the rules.

After 11 years with HM Customs & Excise, John left his role as a senior officer and we lured him to “the other side” to become our VAT consultant in 2000.  Now he provides both our business and private clients with invaluable advice on VAT and other indirect taxes as well as regularly presenting VAT update seminars and training sessions for our team members and clients. 

John must like the Sagars team a great deal, as he travels all the way from his home in Cumbria to work with us.  Outside of his life with Sagars, he has become something of a professional house mover, having lived in more than 15 different homes. He is married to Liz, has a grown up daughter and two very unruly Labradors – Fred and Ozzy. Three successful appearances on the TV show Fifteen To One and on the BBC Radio 4 music quiz Counterpoint mean that John is a welcome addition to any quiz team.
