Meet our Partners

Meet our partners, Chris, John, Kate, Paul, Clive and Fergus

Chris Jones

Chris trained as a Chartered Accountant with Coopers & Lybrand (as it was then) in Leeds. Having also spent a year seconded to industry, he joined Sagars as a manager, became a partner in 1995 and now leads our business client team.

Chris's favoured trips to exotic and far flung places (including mountain climbing in South America and Pakistan and canoeing in Alaska) have taken something of a back seat in the last couple of years or so with the arrival of his two children. Chris has also been struggling of late to retain his place in the Sagars five-a-side team - as a result of a series of injuries (or so he claims).

John Beevers

John qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Sagars in 1994 and on passing his exams, John decided one professional qualification wasn't enough, so he also qualified as an associate of the Institute of Taxation. John focused his career with the Business Client team and established LawPoint, the specialist arm of Sagars servicing the accountancy, taxation and practice management needs of the legal profession. In 2000, John was appointed a partner and now leads both our Private Client and LawPoint teams

On his career so far with Sagars, John remarked, "There's certainly been no shortage of responsibility! It hasn't been all work and no play though - the atmosphere is genuinely friendly and there's a good social life - I'm even just managing to keep my place in the firm's five-a-side football team!"

Kate Naylor

Having graduated in Maths from Oxford University in 1992, the lure of accountancy proved too much for Kate so she joined the Corporate Tax team of a large national firm, where she qualified as a Chartered Accountant (a prize winner in her exams) and a Chartered Taxation Adviser. Kate moved to Yorkshire to marry her husband Ian and in 2001 she joined Sagars. After two years with the firm Kate became a partner in 2003.

Kate and Ian have two young children, and a dog, so as you can imagine their weekends are very busy. When she does have free time, Kate enjoys cooking for friends and family and painting in watercolour.

Paul Mitchell

Paul's a great example of the success of our “home-grown” talent, having joined us as a graduate in 1996. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1999 continuing the trend of prize winners in the firm by coming top in his final exams. He qualified as a Chartered Tax Adviser in 2001 and now provides high quality advice and support to our private clients - specialising in trusts and personal tax planning.

As well as playing a major role in the development of Sagars, Paul has the dubious honour of managing our 5-a-side football team. Unfortunately though, great success in the sporting arena is not something that he can lay claim to!

Clive Smetham

Clive specialises in business acquisitions and disposals, financial assistance, transaction support work and both succession and exit planning. He also provides advisory services to owner managed businesses and has particular expertise within the media and not-for-profit sectors.

He graduated from university with a degree in Accounting and Finance before joining the then Freedman Ross where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant. He then moved to  JGW as it was then and became a partner in 2001 before the firm merged with BDO Stoy Hayward.

Clive joined Sagars as a partner on 1 July 2006 to grow the firm's corporate finance offering.

Fergus Beadle

Fergus joined us from a national accountancy firm in 2004 and his recent promotion takes the number of Sagars partners to six. A Chartered Taxation Adviser and a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, Fergus has specialised in tax for over fifteen years. He provides specialist taxation advice to our clients, particularly in the areas of capital taxes and trusts.

Away from Sagars and the world of tax planning, Fergus lives with his partner Alison near Wakefield, and he defies the traditional stereotype of an accountant, enjoying sailing, rock climbing, abseiling, playing squash, visiting the theatre and (watching) motor racing!
