Christine created the marquetry wall-panels that grace our offices and you can see some of her work (whether whole panels or close up sections) throughout our web site.

This short note tells you a little bit about Christine and her work.

Christine’s background is in Fine Art (Sculpture), but she has always had a great love for Architecture, Interior Design and Furniture.

Although introduced only relatively recently (1996) to marquetry, during cabinet making training, she has been perfecting the technique and this is now Christine’s main specialism. We have benefited from some of Christine’s wall-panels which she creates (sometimes in relief) for exhibition and private commissions and in response to site-specific commissions (foyers, boardrooms etc). She is also planning to add freestanding sculptural forms with a marquetry surface to this area of her work.

Architecture and landscape provide the basis for much of Christine’s work, in which she often explores the dialogue between man-made and organic forms, the potential harmony and/or discord. Balance, counterpoise, dynamic growth and rhythm are all essential elements within the work.

She works as fast as the medium of marquetry will allow, manipulating line and colour, creating energetic shapes through diagonal movement, shifting the weight of those shares around and defining their edges, thus creating movement, tension, vitality and sometimes restlessness and at other times imposing a sense of order and simplification.

The other area of Christine’s work is the production of furniture such as screens, mirrors (freestanding as well as wall based), CD storage (free-standing and wall based), chests of drawers and boxes.

These are often ‘one-off’ pieces but she is currently also developing designs for the above for small-scale batch production, with a more minimal approach to surface decoration. Christine uses a large variety of traditional veneers, often in combination with ALPI veneers (reconstructed real wood veneers from Italy), which are available in traditional grains but also unusual patterns and colours.

Alongside the real thing, you can see a portfolio of Christine’s work in our reception. If you want to find out more, give her a call on 0113 278 3009.
